For whom was all that suffering undergone, which Jesus endured at Calvary? For whom were those hands and feet nailed to the cross? For whom was that side pierced with the spear? For whom did that precious blood flow so freely down? Wherefore was all this done? It was done for you! It was done for the sinful - for the ungodly! It was done freely, voluntarily - not by compulsion - out of love to sinners, and to make atonement for sin. Surely, then, as Christ died for the ungodly, I have a right to proclaim that any one may be saved.

When I walk through crowds of people, I see some bent on pleasure, and some on business - some look rich, and some look poor. But there breathes not a man or woman in the crowd but must have their sins forgiven, or they will be condemned forever in the last day. To know your need of the forgiveness of your sins is the first step to Heaven. Sin is a burden and needs to be lifted off us. Sin is a defilement, and must be cleansed away.
Sin is a mighty debt, and it must be paid.

A FRIEND is one of the greatest blessings on earth. Tell me not of money: affection is better than gold - sympathy is better than lands. He is the poor man who has no friends. This world is full of sorrow because it is full of sin. It is a dark place. It is a lonely place. It is a disappointing Place. The brightest sunbeam in it is a friend. Friendship halves our troubles and doubles our joys.

An atheist was once addressing a crowd of people in the open air. He was trying to persuade them that there was no God and no devil, no heaven, and no hell, no resurrection, no judgment, and no life to come. He advised them to throw away their Bibles and not to mind what preachers said. He recommended them to think as he did, and to be like him. He talked boldly. The crowd listened eagerly. It was “the blind leading the blind”. Both were falling into the ditch. (Matt. 15: 14).

Next to praying there is nothing so important in the Christian life as Bible-reading. God has mercifully given us a Book which is “able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Tim. 3: 15.) By reading that Book we may learn what to believe, what to be, and what to do; how to live with comfort, and how to die in peace. Happy is that man who possesses a Bible! Happier still is he who reads it! Happiest of all is he who not only reads it, but obeys it, and makes it the rule of his faith and practice!
